Types of Dentists and What they do.

Dentistry Is most often thought of as a second cousin to medicine by the general population and by many dentists themselves. Nothing can be farther from truth.

It is actually a superspecialization in healthcare.

Dentistry in india is taught as a five year course, BDS ( Bachelor of Dental Surgery). The admission to BDS is Usually made through the common Entrance Exam for MBBS/BDS. 

After BDS the Post graduation Qualification in Dentistry in INDIA is a 3 year course known as MDS (Master of Dental Surgery). Ther are Nine branches to MDS. Each branch is a supespecialisation dealing with specific disorders/problems/etc. related to the oral cavity.

 

Apart from BDS and MDS, Any other Degree, Diploma, Title is not acknowledged by The Authorities and is illegal and invalid. 

The nine branches are as follows:

1. PROSTHODONTIST (MDS- Prosthodontics and Crown and Bridge and Implants)

– Deals with replacement of missing teeth and other maxillofacial structures  with dentures, CROWNS/BRIDGES and DENTAL IMPLANTS. Basically , anything artificial in the mouth and face is Prosthodontists job.

2. ORTHODONTIST

Deals with Straightening of teeth with help of Braces.

3. PEDODONTIST Also known as PEDIATRIC DENTIST

    Deals with Treatment of all dental Diseases of Infants, Children and adoloscents. AND PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY

4. ENDODONTIST or CONSERVATIVE DENTIST

    Delas with Restorative dentistry such as treatment of Decay with Fillings, Root Canal Treatment, etc.

5. PERIODONTIST

    Deals with all diseases related to the gums.

6. ORAL SURGEON

    Deals with all surgeries related to the Teeth and maxillofacial structures such as Fractures, Trauma, Growth related disturbances, etc.

7. ORAL MEDICINE and RADIOLOGY

    Delas with diagnosis of dental and oral diseases and their treatment with Drugs. Also is responsible for Radiological examination such as X rays, OPG, CT Scan Etc.

8. ORAL PATHOLOGIST

    Delas with diagnosis of Oral Cancer, Etc.

9. COMMUNITY DENTIST

    Delas with increasing awareness of importance of dental health in the population.
